NEW DELHI, APRIL 9
THE Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to hear a PIL demanding an independent probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation or a Special Investigation Team into the killing of 20 suspected illegal loggers in an alleged encounter in Andhra Pradesh.
Advocate R Krishnamoorthy mentioned the matter before Chief Justice of India H L Dattu and pleaded for an intervention by the court in view of the gravity of the incident and the loss of lives under suspicious circumstances.
Justice Dattu asked the lawyer to file a proper PIL, saying it will certainly hear the PIL after Krishnamoorthy file it.
Twenty persons, suspected to be sandalwood smugglers, were killed when police opened fire in a forest of Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh. The anti-smuggling task force claimed the police officers acted in self-defence Tuesday after they were attacked by men armed with axes, sticks and stones.
However, a witness and some other local activists have questioned this version, and accused police of regularly using excessive force on wood-cutters, many of whom are poor migrant workers.
