US helicopter’s wreckage, 3 bodies found
A Nepalese military official said the helicopter may have come down in one of the rivers that snake through valleys in the district of Dolakha, east of the capital, Kathmandu.
A search team of the Nepal Army on Friday morning found the wreckage of US Marine helicopter UH-1 Huey and three bodies near it at 11,200-feet high Kalinchowk Hill, located in east of Kathmandu.
The helicopter, which had six US marines and two Nepal Army personnel on board, had gone missing Tuesday during a relief operation. It had taken off from Kathmandu for Dolakha, the district adjoining Tibet, a little before second earthquake in Nepal.
The helicopter could not be contacted after 2pm that day and search by the Nepal Army and US Marines yielded no results till Thursday. But the Nepali search team was able to locate the wreckage after a local Sherpa spotted it and informed them.
“The area has been cordoned off and we are now waiting for the US team to get there,” an official told The Indian Express.
