Donald Trump says Pakistan starting to respect US again after its army rescues five prisoners
President Donald Trump said on Thursday that Pakistan’s cooperation in securing the release of a U.S.-Canadian couple and their children who had been held by the Taliban-linked Haqqani network signalled a new respect for the United States by Islamabad.
“The Pakistani government’s cooperation is a sign that it is honouring America’s wish that it do more to provide security in the region,” Trump said at a White House event. “They worked very hard on this and I believe they are starting to respect the United States again.”
They were freed nearly five years after the couple was abducted in neighbouring Afghanistan, Pakistani and U.S. officials said on Thursday. American Caitlan Coleman and her Canadian husband Joshua Boyle were kidnapped while backpacking in Afghanistan in 2012 by the Taliban-allied Haqqani network, which the United States has long accused Pakistan of failing to fight.
