Congress to discuss CPI(M)’s proposal for impeachment motion against CJI with other parties

The Congress today was ambivalent about CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury’s proposal for moving an impeachment motion against the Chief Justice of India and said its leaders in the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha would make the party position clear after talking to all parties.

Congress spokesperson RPN Singh said the party did not and would never want the judiciary to be politicised, but noted that the CPI(M) had raised “very important issues”. “These are very important issues that have been raised by the Left party. This is something that the Leaders of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha will talk to everybody (about),” he said. The Congress’s position would be clearly stated after talks with the other parties, he added.

CPI(M) general secretary Yechury yesterday said it was seeking to bring an impeachment motion against the CJI in the budget session of Parliament and had kick-started its efforts to rally around opposition parties.
