J&K: National highway thrown open after five days
A senior traffic official said that trucks carrying essential supplies were also allowed to move towards Kashmir after 1000 hours.
The Srinagar- Jammu national highway, the lone road link connecting the Kashmir with the rest of the world, was thrown open for traffic on Saturday, five days after it remained closed due to the landslides caused by the rain and snowfall.
Officials said that traffic from Jammu to Srinagar was allowed on Saturday morning, after the highway was cleared of landslides on Friday. “We restored the highway yesterday, and some 1800 vehicles who were stranded, were allowed to move towards Srinagar,” said SP National Highway Sanjay Kotwal.
He said that traffic from Jammu to Srinagar was allowed to ply on the highway till 0830 hours today. “Light vehicles were allowed to ply from Jammu to Srinagar from 4.am to 8.30 am today,” he said. “If the weather remains good, traffic would be allowed to ply from Srinagar to Jammu on Sunday.”

The highway was closed earlier this week when heavy rains and snowfall triggered landslides at several places. The bad weather along the national highway had hampered the restoration work leaving thousands of people stranded.
