Seconds before being stabbed, Indian techie called husband to say she was being followed

Prabha Shetty, 39, the Indian software consultant stabbed to death by an unidentified person barely 300 meters away from her home in Sydney, Western Australia on Saturday evening, dialed her husband, Arun Kumar, in Bangalore to tell him she was being followed by a suspicious person moments before she was stabbed and robbed.

The senior technical analyst with the Bangalore headquartered IT consultancy firm Mindtree was working onsite on a client project since 2012 and was due to return to India next month, her husband G Arun Kumar, a Bangalore based software engineer told authorities in Bangalore. Prabha was staying with her colleague at Westmead in Sydney.

“Prabha disembarked from a train and called Arun on his mobile. She told Arun she was being followed and asked him to continue talking to her as she walked home. She said that she had almost reached her home when she suddenly screamed and informed Arun that she had been stabbed. She continued to scream and was even heard telling the attacker to take her belongings. That’s all he heard and the call disconnected,” said Prabha’s brother-in-law T Jayachandra.

The family immediately called Prabha’s room mate at the house in Westmead and discovered that Prabha was lying in a pool of blood near the house. The room mate informed authorities and Prabha was rushed to a private hospital but was declared dead, the brother in law said.

Stab wounds were found on the techie’s abdomen and her throat was slit, Jayachandra said quoting doctors. Prabha’s husband Arun left for Sydney on Sunday to complete the autopsy formalities and collect his wife’s body. He is being assisted by Prabha’s elder brother Dr Shankar Shetty, a doctor in Perth, Jayachandra said.

Prabha Shetty hailed from Mangalore in coastal Karnataka and held a computer science engineering degree. She is the mother of a nine year old girl studying in Bangalore.
