Leopard kills teen on FRI campus

A leopard killed a 17-year-old girl on the campus of the country’s prominent Forest Research Institute (FRI) in Dehradun late Saturday evening.

The incident occurred about 200 metres away from the residence of the director general of Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education, Ashwani Kumar.

The girl has been identified as Samiksha, daughter of a daily wager, Dalbahadur.

According to the local residents, the leopard pounced on the girl when she went to the toilet, which was at the backyard of the house, and dragged her about 10 metres away into the nearby field.

The residents were then alerted and they forced the leopard to leave the girl and rushed her to a hospital where she was declared dead.

Later, the forest department deployed a team of licensed hunters to shoot the leopard. “We have engaged a team of licensed hunters to track down the leopard and kill it,” district forest officer (Dehradun) Sushant Patnaik said.

Earlier on January 16, a leopard had killed a 10-year-old boy Krishna near Baijawala village located close to the same FRI campus. Then, too, the leopard was killed by licensed hunters within a week of the attack in which Krishna was killed.
