‘After raping nun, he sat and ate cake, chocolates’

The alleged rapist of the 71-year-old nun of a convent school in West Bengal’s Ranaghat and his accomplices appeared “remorseless” after the crime and treated themselves to “imported chocolates, cake and pastries” meant for the students.

A source in the convent told The Indian Express that after allegedly raping the nun in the early hours of Saturday, the men said “aab kuch khana-peena ho jaye (let’s have some food)”. They raided the refrigerators in which the food was stored. The source said the chocolates, cake and pastries were brought for the students by a sister who had returned from a foreign trip.

“They tied up two of the sisters in a room and dragged the septuagenarian nun to another room. After committing the crime, they returned and appeared remorseless. They then started opening the refrigerators and took out the food items, including chocolates, cakes, pastries and other sweets meant for the students. Those were brought by a sister who recently went abroad,” said the source, who did not want to be named.

The men continued with their “khana peena” for an hour before leaving the school premises around 4.30 am.

The source said, “They threw away the food they could not eat and trampled on them before leaving. They broke open all the doors and cabinets.” The miscreants took away around Rs 7 lakh, which included the examination fees and money kept in the locker for buying study material for the students.

A police report submitted to the state government said the criminals were “not locals” but “hired goons” from outside. “This is a pre-planned attack to take a revenge on the school authorities. We are still investigating the cause. These men were hired to attack the school and sisters,” said a police source.

No arrests have been made so far although one more suspect from North 24 Paragana has been detained.

According to the hospital authorities, the 71-year-old nun is stable now and is recovering. A medical board was formed on Tuesday to treat her.
