Hurriyat files case against Omar, former SSP

The Hurriyat decision to file a criminal case against the former CM and former police officer has come after a war of words between them.

The war of words between former chief minister Omar Abdullah and former Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ashiq Bukhari has prompted Syed Ali Geelani-led Hurriyat Conference to move court in the killing of 120 civilians in 2010 street protests.

Hurriyat general secretary Ghulam Nabi Sumji Tuesday filed a complaint in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Srinagar against Omar and Bukhari in the 2010 civilian killings. “(We) have decided to register a criminal case against Omer Abdullah and Ashiq Bukhari for the innocent killings of 2010 and will try to bring the murderers of the innocent students to justice,” a Hurriyat statement said. “The court directed the SSP Srinagar to conduct an inquiry in detail in this matter and submit the report before it by April 6.”

The Hurriyat decision to file a criminal case against the former CM and former police officer has come after a war of words between them. In an election rally in south Kashmir last year, Omar accused Bukhari of being responsible for the killings in the 2010 protests. Bukhari, then retired, had been inducted into the PDP at a function attended by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. Bukhari’s induction into PDP, however, generated controversy and the party had to retract its decision.

In a recent interview to a local news website, Bukhari said Omar had paid him Rs 15 lakh for arrest of Hurriyat leader Masarat Alam and told him why he didn’t bump him off.
