Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remains closed for fourth consecutive day

The national highway is closed for traffic and the road is being cleared of the debris due to the landslides at some places.

The Srinagar-Jammu National highway continued to remain closed for the traffic for the fourth consecutive day on Tuesday due to the fresh landslides becoming an obstruction in clearing the debris from the highway.

Officials said that around 200-300 vehicles are presently stranded on the highway and efforts are on to make the road motorable. “Our priority is to pass on the stranded vehicles first,” said a senior traffic official “But the condition of the road is not good, thus creating difficulties for us.”

He said that the fresh landslides on the highway hampered the restoration efforts. “We are hopeful that we would be able to resume the traffic for light motor vehicles today,” he said.

The highway which is the only land route connecting the Kashmir from the rest of the word, was closed for traffic on Sunday, due to the landslides at several places triggered by the heavy snow and rainfall.

DIG Traffic Kashmir Alok Kumar told The Indian Express that there were few fresh landslides along the highway on Tuesday evening. “The restoration process is on and subject to the clearance of the road; we would allow the stranded vehicles to move towards their destination today.” “Once the stranded vehicles would be cleared, we will take a call, when to allow the fresh traffic on the highway.”
