13 arrested for moral policing in Mangalore

Thirteen people have been arrested in connection with two incidents of moral policing in Mangalore since Sunday — one where a group of college students, belonging to different religions, was stopped from going on an excursion to Bangalore and visit the Assembly in session, and the other where a Hindu-Muslim couple was attacked near Ullal beach.

Eleven people, reportedly belonging to the Hindu Jagaran Vedike and the Bajrang Dal, were arrested for allegedly preventing 38 students of Mudipu First Grade college from visiting Bangalore.

Mangalore (city) police commissioner S Murugan said the 11 people had attacked the college students Sunday when they were preparing to embark on a study tour. Police said the right-wing vigilantes had attacked the political science students, claiming that all the girls going on the tour were Hindus while the boys were Muslims.

In a second moral policing incident at Ullal beach Monday, a Muslim youth and his female friend, a Hindu, were riding on a bike near the beach when they were stopped and attacked by a group of vigilantes. The woman later filed a complaint with police who have arrested two persons in this connection.
