Senior lawyer and Aam Aadmi Party leader Prashant Bhushan Thursday said recent CBI directors were “weak and pliable” and accused the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) of not doing enough to prevent corruption in the investigating agency.
Citing political and government interference in the functioning of CBI, Bhushan said greater transparency and an overseeing authority like the Lokpal will ensure its independence.

Speaking about the change in rules which dictates that a panel comprising the PM, Chief Justice of India and the Leader of Opposition will appoint the CBI chief, Bhushan said, “Recently, we have seen appointments of weak and pliable people as CBI directors.” He alleged that this suited the interests of the political class.
Calling for an institutional mechanism for probing corruption at top levels of CBI, he said, “This is the problem that we are facing. In the case of the former CBI chief where we had made a complaint to CVC, unfortunately no action was taken because nobody knew what to do.”
