Just weeks after the Maharashtra Animal Prevention ( Amendment) Act, 1995 was passed, probably in the first case in the state, the Malegaon police booked three people for allegedly slaughtering a calf.
Under the amended law, slaughter of bulls and bullocks is also prohibited, the old law deemed slaughtering of cow illegal.

Confirming the development, Additional Superintendent of Police Sunil Kadasane, Malegaon told The Indian Express , “We have seized 150 kg of beef worth Rs 35,000. We had source-based information that a calf was illegally brought and was being slaughtered in an abandon shop within the jurisdiction of Azad Nagar police station. A team was sent but by then the accused managed to flee,” he said.
“The animal was chopped into four pieces and the meat was put into a polythene bag. Once we get the accused, we will get a clear picture on how the animals were brought and who was the recipient of it,” he added.
