On April Fools’ Day, Modi, Kejriwal become faces of political sarcasm

It’s that day of the year again when you are scared to answer the phone or even talk to a fellow person on the street lest they make a fool out of you. While it was always a day intended for harmless humour, over the years the April Fools Day has turned into one when celebrities and news channels make major faux-pas after failing to distinguish between what is fake and what is real.

This year, political parties and activist groups seemed to have had a gala time trying to paint their opponents with the same (fools’) brush. On one hand, the National Students Union of India (NSUI), the students wing of the Congress took out a rally with posters of Prime Minister Narendra Modi dubbed as ‘feku’ (yes, that rather infamous name that was given to Modi in the run-up to the general elections.) Modi was repeatedly called ‘feku’ on the charge of concocting lies about his governance record in Gujarat. Today, NSUI members took out the rally, wishing ‘feku’ (aka Modiji) a happy birthday and even feeding each other pieces of cake. They also satirically claimed that the government has not fulfilled its promises with respect to the youth.
If you think Modi-ji alone is having a bad day, you are wrong. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who is stuck in a bit of a pickle with the whole drama (read violent infighting) within his Aam Aadmi Party, seems to have also been the target of April Fool protesters. Posters showing a grim-looking Kejriwal in a meditational pose have sprung up across the streets of Delhi. The posters, which wish Delhiites a ‘Kejriwal Diwas’, have been issued by the Bhagat Singh Kranti Sena, a right-wing organization infamous known for its attack on AAP lawyer Prashant Bhushan (perhaps Kejriwal might chuckle a bit). The group has also initiated protest rallies against Arundhati Roy and Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
