Mizoram: Local body polls on April 30
Mizoram’s State Election Commission announced on Wednesday that local body polls would be held in six of the state’s districts on April 30. More than 700 seats in the elections will be reserved for women and those elected will hold a term of five years instead of the usual three years.
The upcoming polls will be important for all political parties since the term would be beyond the state-wide elections slated for 2018.
The polls would cover both rural and urban bodies, with a total of 2801 seats being up for grabs (741 seats will be reserved for women candidates).
State Election Commissioner L Tochhong said a “common election camp” would be erected near each of the polling booths during the polls where no display of party flags or banners would be allowed. While political party workers and leaders would be allowed to man the camps, a person considered neutral would have to also be present.
