Suspected case of Sati in Latur, woman’s body found from husband’s funeral pyre
PARTIALLY BURNT Body of a 50-year-old woman was found from her husband’s funeral pyre on Tuesday in a village in Latur district, giving rise to suspicion Sati, a banned practice in India, was performed. Police have however denied the possibility of it being a case Sati.
The incident took place in Latur district in Marathwada region of Maharashtra, when family members went to collect the ashes of one Tukaram Mane (55), who had passed away of a cardiac arrest on Monday. The family members found his wife Usha’s burnt body in the pyre.
Within hours of Tukaram’s funeral, Usha (50) had gone missing on Monday evening after the last rites were performed on her husband. Killari Police in Latur district has registered a case of sudden death.
Latur district superintendent Dnyaneshwar Chavan said over phone from Latur, “We have thoroughly investigated the case and we do not think this is a case of Sati. We have come to know she was under shock and was very week. She may have fainted and then her clothes might have caught fire. The body had been partially burnt. Further probe in the case is on.” The couple is survived by two sons.
