Mizoram: Students protest against spate of sackings, transfers of Governors
A handful of students each sat or stood outside six major Central government offices across Aizawl on Tuesday and blocked employees from entering the premises and had hoisted black flags to protest against the spate of transfers and sackings of Governors – Mizoram has seen seven Governors come and go in less than nine months.
All six offices – which included India Post, Food Corporation of India, Telecom, Customs, Census and the Principal Accountant General – remained shut through the day with no violence breaking out between the protesting students and employees or those who turned up for transactions as a smattering of police kept a watch on the sit-ins.
A statement by the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP or Mizo Students’ Association) later thanked the public and employees of these offices for understanding the reasons behind the sit-in.
“The MZP considers the Centre’s moves of discarding Governors it wants to quit on Mizoram an insult to the state and its people,” the statement said while thanking anyone the sit-in inconvenienced and asking they understand the protest was “a matter that concerns the community.”
The student body also said it will also hold demonstrations when President Pranab Mukherjee visits the state on April 9 and 10 and submit a memorandum on the issue.
The MZP had earlier led a demonstration during the swearing-in ceremony of K N Tripathi, who took over additional charge of the state on April 4.
