You are cleaning streets, what about the dirty mouths of BJP leaders: Sena asks PM Modi

Two days after BJP MP Dilip Gandhi made a controversial comment supporting tobacco consumption, the Shiv Sena has challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to “clean up the mouths of his MPs who are spreading dirt through speech”.

In an editorial in party mouthpiece Saamna, Shiv Sena has launched a pungent attack on MP Gandhi suggesting that he should be ‘honoured’ with a Noble Prize for his ‘astounding discovery’ that tobacco helps digestion.

“Prime Minister Modi has put a check on the party leaders, his ministers and MPs from talking too much in the media. However, there are a few refuse to budge. Among these are leaders like Sadhvi Prachi, Giriraj Singh and now the honour is claimed by Ahmednagar MP Dilip Gandhi who has made the discovery that the belief that ‘tobacco causes cancer’ was illfounded and its consumption was actually helps digestion,” an excerpt from Saamna read.

Saamna goes on to add that many scientists and doctors must have fainted after Gandhi’s discovery. He deserves a Noble Prize, mocked the mouth piece.

“Prime Minister Modi has picked up the broom to clean up streets, but how will he clean up the mouths of his leaders who are spreading dirt through their speech?” read the Sena mouthpiece.

Gandhi, who is also the chairperson of a parliamentary committee on subordinate legislation pertaining to tobacco, was felicitated by a union of traders selling tobacco for taking a ‘sympathetic view’. Speaking at a function in his constituency, Gandhi had reportedly said that that there was no study linking tobacco with cancer. He had added that the tobacco actually ‘improves digestion’.

The Saamna editorial cites the examples of NCP chief Sharad Pawar and RR Patil. While the former has himself stated that consumption of tobacco products caused his cancer and he managed to survive by starting the treatment at the right time, the latter passed away battling the disease.
