Before the 2014 general elections in India, a campaign was launched to maximize the number of voters. A similar drive has been witnessed in the United Kingdom where more and more people are being urged to register for the May 2015 elections.
The citizens of United Kingdom can register to vote for the 2015 general elections latest by Monday midnight.
Reports of the Electoral Commission suggest that in the past five weeks 1.7 million voters have registered themselves out of which a 470,000 were online.
According to BBC reports, the highest number of registrations came on April 16, when 110,000 voters registered after the host of a debate aired on the channel mentioned registration at the end of the telecast.
But these numbers fall short when compared with the number of potential voters in the region. The Electoral Commission reports show that the numbers of unregistered voters maybe as high as 7.5 million.
Jenny Watson, Electoral Commission chairwoman said, “It takes just a few minutes to apply to register online, so do it now. We don’t want anyone to miss out, but if you miss the deadline on 20 April and then try to vote you will be turned away from the polling station on election day. Make sure this doesn’t happen to you.”
Unregistered voters may register online by Monday midnight if they wish to vote since it’s too late to send a registration form by post.
Various party leaders and campaign groups also appealed the voters to register.
UK general elections are scheduled to take place of May 7, 2015.
