What are the main challenges ahead of you at a time the party is perhaps at its weakest?
That is the challenge, to overcome our weaknesses, to adopt the correct organisational methods and correctives that we will identify at the organisational plenum later this year.
Are there divisions on the line the party should pursue, and were there differences over the election of the new general secretary?
No, none. We have a very vibrant inner-party democracy and that finds expression in various ways. For those who don’t follow us, it looks like there are catfights going on. But it is basically different points of view that are discussed and then we come to a collective decision, which has always been our practice and we are happy about this vibrant inner-party democracy.

How do you plan to meet the key challenge of attracting the youth?
There are various things we have in mind and plan to do but as I said, we are going to have our organisational plenum within six months and that is where all these things will be concretised and action taken.
Who is your bigger enemy, the BJP or the Congress?
There is no longer a question of a bigger or a smaller enemy because today, the neo-liberal economic policies the Congress had pursued, the BJP is pursuing with greater vigour. In addition, the BJP has got this very nasty and extreme as well as damaging Hindutva agenda. This is a very deadly cocktail, the two aspects and Mr Modi has mixed both of them together. So that is our primary priority and clearly, the Congress is not the alternative to this because it is their policies the BJP is taking forward.
The CPM has been talking about broader Left unity. Is there any possibility of a merger with the CPI?
A merger is not on the agenda. What is on the agenda is greater cooperation and unity among our mass organisations in joint struggles. That we think is the way forward.
