Fresh PSA slapped against Masarat Alam
Masarat Alam was released in March after spending four and a half years in jail under six consecutive PSAs.
A day after defence tore apart the prosecution and bail for separatist leader Masarat Alam, J-K government has slapped fresh Public Safety Act (PSA) against him and shifted him to Jammu jail.
The fresh PSA against Masarat has come even as Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed said that he believes in “battle of ideas”. When in opposition, Mufti had been criticizing the then Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for booking separatist leaders under the PSA and had promised that he would release all separatist leaders.
Sources say Masarat was shifted to Jammu’s Kotbalwal jail during the night and a fresh PSA has been slapped against him by Deputy Commissioner of Budgam.
The decision of PSA against Masarat has been taken after a court in Budgam reserved decision on his bail plea. During the hearing of the bail application, a team of defence lawyers tore apart the prosecution and challenged his booking for sedition and waging war against the state.
Citing a J-K High court’s judgment, defence said that it is not an offence to hoist Pakistan flag. As Masarat’s bail was imminent, he was booked under PSA.
This is 26th PSA against Massrat since 1990. Masarat was released in March after spending four and a half years in jail under six consecutive PSAs.
