Gujurat: Girl stabbed to death in Rajkot college
An undergraduate girl student was allegedly stabbed to death by a youth in the campus of PD Malaviya Commerce College in the city on Thursday morning with the police suspecting the assailant to be a jilted lover of the victim.
Police said victim Daksha Makwana (21) reached the college at 10:15 am to take her examination of first year of bachelor of commerce with her grandmother, on a scooter. While she was parking her scooter in the parking lot, a youth rushed at her and stabbed her.
“In a bid to save herself, the girl ran towards the main gate of the college. But the assailant chased and caught up with her at the main gate and stabbed her again with a large knife and then ran away,” assistant commissioner of police (ACP) for west zone, AL Chaudhary said.
Police said the girl was rushed to Civil Hospital in the city where doctors declared her dead on arrival. Police have identified the attacker as Raju Makwana, a resident of Babria Colony in the city.
“We suspect the boy was in love with the girl as both of them lived in the same neighbourhood and she was not interested in him. However, we are still investigating the case. We are trying to ascertain if anybody else helped the accused in committing the murder,” the ACP further said.
Dog squad of the city police reached the crime scene soon after the incident. But sources said the assailant sped away in some vehicle after stabbing the girl and therefore dogs were struggling to find his trail.
The college is located on Gondal road, one of the arterial roads of the city and semester-II examination for first year of B.Com are going on.
“The examination was scheduled to begin at 10:30 am and paper distribution was going on. Majority of the students and college staff had taken their seats in examination halls. Hearing cries of the girl, we rushed out. But by that time, the girl had been stabbed and the murderer had fled,” Kamlesh Joshi, in-charge principal of PD Malaviya college said.
Malaviyanagar police inspector Mulu Godhania said the assailant had been waiting for the girl in the college campus.
“He was sitting in a bench near the parking lot. As the girl was parking her vehicle, he confronted her and stabbed her several times,” said Godhania.
The police inspector added that the girl had sustained 17 stab wounds which proved fatal.
The college however, went ahead with the examination.
