AAP crisis reaches Haryana, national member says state unit dissolved
On Thursday, the party’s national executive member from Haryana, Naveen Jaihind, dismissed the activity as being carried out by a breakaway group, owing allegiance to former senior leader Yogendra Yadav.
The fallout of the rift in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has now reached Haryana, where an initiative of the party’s state unit has exposed the fault-lines here. AAP “volunteers” had launched a Swaraj Samvad, an exercise they described as an attempt to gauge the political ground realities in the state.
On Thursday, the party’s national executive member from Haryana, Naveen Jaihind, dismissed the activity as being carried out by a breakaway group, owing allegiance to former senior leader Yogendra Yadav. “They are a small bunch of six to seven people who have nothing to do with the party. They are now representatives of the sacked Yogendra Yadav and not the party. As such the Haryana unit of the party stands dissolved,” Jaihind said.
Those behind the Swaraj Samvad, however, said the initiative was launched after a party meeting in Gurgaon, where, according to them, majority of the leaders and workers present had backed the idea. They also admit that they support Yogendra Yadav. Sources said this faction was using the exercise to explore its standing in the state.
Rajiv Godara, who had been speaking on behalf of the party as its spokesman, said, “We obtained a majority opinion at the Gurgaon meeting and Swaraj Samvad is a campaign of the party though being held under a different banner. We were duly authorised by party workers at Gurgaon where 70 per cent of the gathering ruled in favour of running the Swaraj Samvad under a different banner within the party,” he said.
Sources said recent events are likely to cast a shadow on the future of leaders who had until now been speaking on behalf of the party. Jaihind made it clear that there would be a revamp. Godara, however, challenged his standing to speak on behalf of the state unit. “Jaihind has never been part of the Haryana unit. He is a member of national executive and not authorised to speak for the state unit,” he said.
