Maid found murdered in Lt Col Saurabh Sood’s servant quarter in Assam town
The police on Thursday recovered the body of a woman – a maid servant – in the servant’s quarter of a doctor in the Indian Air Force (IAF) colony in Jorhat in upper Assam, with preliminary inquiry saying she was murdered three or four days ago.
“The body of a woman was found in the servant’s quarter of Lt Col Saurabh Sood, a doctor with the IAF Hospital at Rowriah in Jorhat. While the body had started decomposing, preliminary inquiry showed a slit on her neck. We suspect it to be a murder, but nothing concrete can be said at such an early stage,” Jorhat SP Amandeep Kaur said. Jorhat is about 310 kms east of Guwahati.
The SP said the woman – identified as Munmun Saikia (24) – had last come out of the Lt Col’s quarter at around 9:30 PM on Monday after completing the household work.
“She was a widow who belonged to a village under Borhola police station about 15 kms from Jorhat, but used to stay in the servant’s quarter with her two children. On Monday her children had gone to stay in her paternal house in the village. But whether she was murdered the same night or on the next day is not yet certain,” Kaur said.
The SP also informed that while Lt Col Sood was away on temporary duty to Kolkata for a few days, his wife and daughter were still there in the quarter. “While the body was taken for a post-mortem examination, a case has been registered in the Rowriah outpost,” she said.
“The doctor’s wife called up the maid servant on her mobile the next morning, but got no response. At one point of time the phone showed as switched off. On Thursday morning when a relative from the village came looking for her, she found the servant’s quarter locked from outside.
Breaking the lock open they found the woman lying on her bed with her face covered with a pillow. When the police went there it was found that the woman was already dead and the body was beginning to decompose. There was a slit on the left side of her neck,” SP Kaur informed.
