BJP president Amit Shah on Sunday formally launched the “oust Congress” campaign in Assam and asked the people to get ready to ensure the exit of the Congress party in the 2016 Assembly Elections due in March-April next year. He also harped on the burning issue of Bangladeshi influx into Assam and said that only a BJP government could ensure that the infiltrators were detected and expelled.
“Bangladeshi infiltrators have taken away everything. Yet the Congress government does not have the guts to touch them. It is only the BJP which can free Assam from the clutches of the Bangladeshsis,” Shah said.

Shah also took credit for the process of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and said that it was the BJP government at the Centre that had earmarked Rs 140 crore to the state government for this purpose. “Once the NRC is revised and updated, all the Bangladeshi infiltrators will be exposed. But the Congress does not want this. They (Congress) instead want their votes,” Shah said.
The BJP chief however said that those people who had come from Bangladesh because of religious discrimination would be given citizenship. “But the people of Assam need not worry. The entire country will have to share the burden of these people,” he said.
“The Congress has ruled Assam for most of the time since independence barring two terms by the AGP. But where has it taken Assam? There have been so many instances of corruptions and financial scandals. The CAG has pointed at a Rs 13,000 crore scam. There is scam in the agriculture department as well as in PDS. Congress leaders have been also accused of benefitting from the multi-crore Sharadha chit fund scam,” the BJP president said.
He also took a potshot at Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi – whom he referred to as Rahul-baba – and said that it was quite natural for people like him “born with a silver spoon” not to see any positive change happening to the country since BJP came to power. “You can’t see the changes because you are wearing foreign glasses. Start wearing Hindustani glasses, and you will see the changes brought about by the Narendra Modi government,” Shah said.
“Inflation has been brought under control. Prices of petrol and diesel have come down. Over 14 crore BPL people have opened bank accounts. Over Rs 2 lakh crore have been deposited in the exchequer from coal block auction. Another Rs One lakh crore has come from spectrum auction. Why can’t Sonia Gandhi and Rahul-baba see this? Why do they still say this government belongs to the corporate?” he asked.
