Many vacancies in disaster panel, fill them: Opp tells govt
Rajya Sabha members from the Opposition reminded the government Monday that the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) remains headless with numerous vacancies and the situation should be rectified at the earliest.
The matter was first raised by Trinamool Congress’s Derek O’Brien. “The NDMA was dissolved. It is not that the newly-constituted NDMA would have stopped the earthquake problem. Out of a board of 11 or 12 members, only three members have been appointed. So, our humble suggestion is not to keep those seats vacant,” O’Brien said. CPM’s Yechury said the Disaster Management Act needed an overhaul.
Speaking at the Rajya Sabha on Monday, Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav said SP MP Naresh Aggarwal’s nephews were stuck in Nepal and appeals to the Indian High Commission had failed to yield desired response.
Responding to this, External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj said the members should not “increase pressure” on Indian Embassy personnel in Kathmandu. Hours later, Swaraj said Agrawal’s relatives had been evacuated.
