Chhattisgarh road accident: 11 of family killed, 26 hurt after their van overturned
Eleven women, including an 8-year-old girl, of a family were on Thursday killed and 26 others injured when a van carrying a marriage party overturned after colliding with a truck trailer in Chhattisgarh’s Balod district.
Police suspect that the driver of the van was in an inebriated state.
The incident occurred in the wee hours at Armurkasa village under Dallirajhra police station limits when the matador van was heading towards Dallirajhra from Bhaiyahar village, said Balod Superintendent of Police Sheikh Arif Hussain.
The vehicle, with nearly 40 people of a Halba family on board, turned turtle following a severe head-on collision with the trailer truck coming from opposite direction between Kusumkasa and Armurkasa villages, leaving 10 women, including a minor girl, dead on the spot, the SP said.
“Another woman succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital in Balod during treatment,” Hussain said. Those killed were identified as Sumrin Bai Halba (50), Mombai (45), Prembai (40), Meenbai (45), Dasribai (50), Rambai (60), Sakita (40), Pawara (25), Sumin (45), Neminbai (35) and her daughter Satachhi (8).
Twenty six other passengers were injured, including five of them critically, in the mishap, he said. Soon after being informed about the mishap, a police team along with medical aid rushed towards the spot and shifted the injured to a local hospital, he said.
“Five seriously injured persons have been shifted to Durg for further treatment after being provided preliminary aid,” the SP said.
According to preliminary investigation, the van driver was allegedly in inebriated state which led to the accident, the SP said.
A manhunt has been launched to nab the driver who escaped from the spot after the mishap, he said. A case has been registered in this connection and further probe is on.
Meanwhile, Balod district administration has sanctioned immediate financial assistance of Rs 25,000 to the kin of each deceased.
Chief Minister Raman Singh expressed grief over the incident and extended his condolence to the grieve-stricken families of the deceased, an official release said.
He prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured and instructed the officials concerned to provide best possible medical facilities to them, the release added.
