In coma for 42 years, KEM nurse Aruna Shanbaug passes away
The 67-year-old was slowly recovering, doctors treating her at civic-run KEM hospital- her home for last 42 years- said on Sunday.
Aruna Shanbaug, former KEM nurse who was in a vegetative state for last 42 years, passed away today at 8.30 am following a cardiac arrest at KEM hospital.
Dr Ahmad Pazare, head of medicine department, said, “She was recovering and all her other medical parameters were fine. Today she suffered a sudden attack and could bot be saved.”
Shanbaug’s final rites will be conducted at the hospital at 12.30 pm. The 67-year-old was slowly recovering, doctors treating her at civic-run KEM hospital- her home for last 42 years- said on Sunday.

“While Shanbaug has still not been put off ventilator support, her condition is better than it was yesterday,” Dr Avinash Supe, dean at KEM hospital, had said. She was diagnosed with a bout of pneumonia last week following which she was admitted in the medical intensive care unit (MICU) and had to be fed through tubes.
According to her latest X-ray results, the pneumonia infection had subsided. The 67-year-old was put on antibiotics and ventilator support under close scrutiny of a team of doctors.
This was the second time she had contracted the infection in last two years. In November 2013, she had another bout of pneumonia following which she was admitted in the MICU.
While until Friday, her condition was critical, doctors said there was improvement in her medical parameters as the infection had subsided until Sunday night.
