Delhi confidential: Move Awaited
It’s been a month since Sitaram Yechury was elected CPM general secretary, but he is yet to occupy the designated office at the AKG Bhawan headquarters. Its previous occupant, Prakash Karat, has moved into one of the rooms for politburo members on the same floor of the building — he used to occupy the same room earlier. However, Yechury is still working out of his old office and does not seem to be in a hurry to move to the general secretary’s room. His aides say he has many files to clear and the shift will take time. Meanwhile, the AKG Bhawan staff plan to whitewash the general secretary’s office before Yechury moves in.
Some days ago, the usher who entered the visitors’ room at the Prime Minister’s Office was unaware of the confusion he was going to create. There were three guests waiting to meet the Prime Minister — NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Arvind Panagariya, Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian and Deputy NSA Arvind Gupta. So when the usher said ‘Arvindji’ was being called, all the three gentlemen reacted. It took some time to figure out which of the three ‘Arvinds’ was to go in first.
In a bid to revamp the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, the government is learnt to have decided to appoint film actor Vidya Balan, director Rajkumar Hirani and cinematographer-director Santosh Sivan as members of the FTII board. Further, in the wake of constant demands from the film industry to make the FTII curriculum more relevant and contemporary, the Information & Broadcasting Ministry has decided to revisit and “re-do” the syllabus. The ministry also plans to move soon on getting FTII the status of an institute of national importance.
The NDA government is going all out to mark International Yoga Day on June 21. In a letter dated May 14, the UGC has asked universities to include a range of activities for the day. A demonstration by yoga practitioners will be organised, with “willing” students and faculty members practicing with them. The “best participants” of the yoga session will be awarded prizes and certificates. An exhibition on yogic postures and online essay competions will also be organised.
