Mobile towers can now be installed in Lutyens’ Delhi’s govt buildings
Lutyens’ Delhi residents, who have been facing a tough time following the two-year crackdown on illegal mobile towers in the area, can finally heave a sigh of relief. The Ministry of Urban Development has, in principle, agreed to allow installation of mobile towers on government buildings, subject to structural safety and payment of licence fee by telecom service providers.
The country’s who’s who, including parliamentarians, ministers, bureaucrats, and industrialists living in the Lutyens’ Delhi, have been grappling with the problem of frequent call drop. In the last two years, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has sealed around 100 illegal mobile towers in the area, leading to very poor mobile connectivity.
Further, the telecom companies could not install towers on government buildings due to security reasons. But now, the Ministry has finally made a policy in this regard and decided to allow installation of mobile towers on government buildings to improve the service and address the call drop problem.
The towers can now be installed on all Central government buildings, including the NDMC building, Lutyens’ zone bungalows, defence buildings, and postal department buildings. But the towers will have to be shared by all telecom service providers.
