Cops bust 2nd arms haul ahead of MCD elections
Just two days before municipal polls in the Capital, the Delhi Police arrested a 35-year-old suspected smuggler with 30 semi-automatic pistols, a carbine and cartridges, from Nizamuddin. This is the second arms haul within a week.
The police said that the arms recovered from the accused identified as Rajpal Singh from Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh, were to be used by criminals on Sunday when residents vote for their civic body.
Singh was arrested from Nizamuddin bridge on Friday afternoon following a tip off that he was out to deliver cache of arms to someone in the area.
Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, deputy commissioner of police (special cell), meanwhile, said,”Singh tried to fire at the raiding party when it asked him to surrender. He was, however, overpowered after a brief scuffle.”
Yadav also said that Singh is the brother of Richhpal Singh, a Burhanpur-based criminal who runs a racket of manufacturing and supplying illegal firearms.
The seized carbine is priced between Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh in grey marker while the semi-automatic pistol can easily fetch anything between Rs 25,000 to Rs 40,000, depending on its quality.
