President Election: Mamata Banerjee meets Sonia Gandhi, bats for consensus opposition candidate
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday met Congress president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi.
Speaking to media after her interaction with Congress President, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said, ” Discussed important matter regarding politics and president election”. However Mamata clarified that no name has been discussed as of now. She has stressed for the need of a united opposition candidate to put up a tough fight against NDA, which has numbers on its side. Reacting to reports of CBI raid on P Chidambaram and IT-raid Lalu Prasad Yadav, Mamata Banerjee said that, ” Political vendetta is going on, discussed in details”. She further said that another meeting will be held within next two weeks to discuss possible candidature for the president election.
With President Pranab Mukherjee’s term set to end in July, Gandhi has already met Janata Dal-United JD (U) leader Nitish Kumar and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Sharad Pawar. According to reports, Congress Pradesh Committee president Adhir Chowdhury, has written a letter to the party high command, requesting her to deal with Banerjee carefully as most of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders are under the scanner in Saradha and Narada scams.
