Goa tragedy: Search operations on after 50 fall into river following footbridge collapse
At least 50 people fell into a south Goa river after a footbridge collapsed in the state’s Curchorem area on Thursday evening.
As per initial reports, the people fell into the Sanvordem river after a dilapidated Portuguese-era footbridge gave way.
Reports suggest that the bridge caved in when the state fire And emergency Services personnel were rescuing a youth who had jumped into the river apparently in a suicide bid.
“Around 50 people had gathered on the bridge to watch the rescue operation, and all of them fell into the river as it collapsed,” a police official told OutlookIndia.
The Fire And Emergency Services personnel started searching for others. Further details are awaited.
Other reports on Twitter said that the bridge had not been used for over 10 years and authorities had neglected dismantling it on time.
