Can Mathematics be made an optional subject, Bombay HC asks education boards
The Bombay High Court on Monday suggested all education boards to consider making Mathematics as an optional subject, to help students obtain their graduation degrees.
A division bench of Justice VM Kanade and Justice AK Menon said, “We have seen that almost 90 percent of students drop out as they are not able to clear Maths and Language exams. These subjects are not required in degree faculties like Arts. If an option is given to students regarding these subjects, then it will help them complete graduation.”
The bench has asked the education boards to take advise from experts and revert by July 26, whether its suggestions can be acted upon.
A reference was made by the court to an earlier system prevalent in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) board, until the year 1975, when Sanskrit language was given as an alternative option to General Maths, to help students clear their exams. “Is it possible for you (SSC) board to revert to the old scheme?”
The court gave the direction while hearing a petition filed by Dr Harish Shetty asking for steps being take to assist students suffering from learning disabilities at school levels.
