‘My aim is to win gold’: PV Sindhu on course to become 1st Indian world badminton champion
Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu cruised into the final of the World Championship with an easy win over Chen Yufei of China, setting herself up on course to become the first Indian to win a gold in the showpiece event.
The 22-year-old Sindhu notched up a straight-game (21-13 21-10) win over World No. 10 Chen in the women’s singles semifinals last night, to assure India of at least a silver medal from her after compatriot Saina Nehwal had to settle for a bronze. In the summit clash, Sindhu faces Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara who had beaten Saina 12-21 21-17 21-10 in the first semifinals on Saturday. With Saina’s semifinal loss, the hopes of an all-Indian final did not materialise.
This will be Sindhu’s first final appearance in the World Championship and thus her best ever performance. This will also be a third medal for Sindhu in the World Championships, having won bronze twice in 2013 and 2014 after losing at the semifinal stage in both the editions. She can do even better and script history by becoming the first Indian world champion shuttler.
