Mumbai Rains: Mumbai Metro running, but commuters complain about huge rush
On a day that Mumbai was brought to a standstill by heavy rains, the Mumbai Metro came as a saviour for the city’s beleaguered public. Heavy rains lashed Mumbai and adjoining Navi Mumbai and Thane regions, delaying suburban train services and leaving vehicles crawling through water-logged roads in low-lying areas. Traffic jams were reported on all major arterial roads, including the Eastern and Western Express Highway, Sion-Panvel highway and LBS Marg as the rains continued since last night. Water-logging was reported in low-lying areas of Parel and Sion. A tree fell on the busy Saat Rasta road, affecting road traffic.
However, DNA has learnt that despite waterlogging on most streets, the metro was almost on schedule and running, even though users did complain about the frequency. There was a huge rush at Ghatkopar station. Due to offices shutting early, huge crowds gathered during non-peak hours, which was why additional services were included to ease traffic by metro.
A couple of hours ago, the Mumbai Metro Twitter handle tweeted: “With Mumbai’s trademark rains giving us their best, so are we at #MumbaiMetro! Still running on schedule just like our beloved city!”
