Surya Shashti fast: A day to dispell the darkness inside
Surya Shashti fast falls on October 26th. This festival is dedicated to Lord Surya. On this day, devotees wake up early and take bath in a lake, pond or a river nearby. After taking a bath, they worship the rising Sun, while standing at the bank of river. After the bath, they offer water containing seven type of flowers, rice, sandalwood, sesame, etc to the Sun. They also chant Lord Surya’s name and his mantra for the entire day and feed Brahmins and poor couple. They donate clothes and food grains to priests. The glory of Surya dev can be read in various ancient scriptures. It is believed that worshipping him in full faith and respect, fulfills all the desires of a person. Many people observe this fast to get a child too.
