India v/s Sri Lanka: Twitter doffs its hat as Virat Kohli enters a league of his own with 19th Test ton
Virat Kohli smashed his 19th Test ton on Sunday as India piled on the runs against a hapless Sri Lanka bowling attack in Nagpur.
Skipper Kohli’s heroics helped the hosts march towards a massive first innings lead in the on-going second Test.
The big talking point, in an otherwise dull contest, was an incredible record made by Kohli on Sunday. The Indian captain has now broken Australian great Ricky Ponting and former South African skipper Graeme Smith’s record of most tons by a captain in a calender year. This was Kohli’s 10th ton of 2017, while Ponting (2005 and 2006) and Smith (2005) had scored 9 each in a calender year.
Kohli also bested Sunil Gavaskar’s record of most hundred’s by an Indian captain. This was Kohli’s 12th Test ton (49 innings), while Gavaskar had 11 hundreds (74 innnings) as India captain.
