Cyclone Ockhi: South Gujarat, Kutch on alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a very severe cyclonic warning for Gujarat as Cyclone Ockhi, which is moving across some parts of south India, is expected to land in Kutch and south Gujarat in the next 72 hours.
After causing much damage in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the cyclone is likely to weaken gradually. It’s intensity is likely to reduce from very severe to severe from Monday.
The cyclone is on a north-western cause, drifting towards the coastlines of Gujarat and Maharashtra at the speed of 17 kmph. It may make a landfall at Gujarat, according to an IMD forecast. Kutch, south Gujarat and Maharashtra regions are expected to receive light to moderate rainfall during the next three days.
“As the intensity of the cyclone is likely to reduce, there are less chances of a flood-like situation in Gujarat. Light to moderate rain-showers are expected along the coastlines.
Ockhi may make a landfall in Gujarat, so a warning for fishermen has been issued,” said an official at IMD, Ahmedabad.
