New surface movement system to enhance safety at airport
In an attempt to enhance safety and efficiency in all ground operations related to flight movements, the national airport operator Airports Authority of India (AAI) installed the Advanced Surface Movement Guidance Control System at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International airport (SVPI).
The new system, costing nearly 18 crores, was inaugurated by AK Dutta, member of AAI board in presence of AK Banerjee, executive director, Communications, Navigation System (CNS-O&M), and Mansoor Ahmed, executive director, CNS-P on Satuday.
The system features runway incursion detection based on safety and logic, and has alerting algorithms that send advanced warnings of potential incursions to controllers. It will enable the airport to reduce incursions while maximising the use of runways and taxiways.
Talking about the same, officials of AAI said, “As of now, 11 airports across the country have this system. It is extremely useful during fog when the visibility is too low. This system will be under control of the ATC and will provide controllers with a clear picture of airport traffic and advanced warnings of potential incursions.”
