14-yr-old Udaipur girl swims 47km
Gauravi Singhvi of Udaipur has created a record by swimming continuously for more than 9 hours to cover the 47km distance between Juhu Beach and Gateway of India, in Mumbai.
The 14-year-old had earlier created a record by swimming 36 kilometres in the Arabian Sea.
Gauravi was supposed to begin the swimming at 3.30am but the tides delayed her by around an hour. She finished the swim at around 1.30 in the afternoon.
Speaking from Mumbai on the phone, Gauravi’s mother Shubh Singhvi told DNA, “She had been training exhaustively for the last year and we as parents supported her to keep her dream alive. Her father and I were with her all the time. The tide delayed the start and the anti-tides slowed her down towards the end,” said Shubh.
“The fishermen’s nets cut into her legs and injured her and there are prawn bites too. As she finished the swim, we were at a loss of words.
