Maha Shivratri 2018: Witness live darshan of Lord Shiva at Somnath temple
Over one lakh devotees visited the Somnath temple in Gir Somnath district on the occasion of Mahashivratri being celebrated on Tuesday.
Serpentine queues could be seen outside the temple from 4 am. A ‘palkhi yatra’ (palanquin procession) was taken out in the town, Vijaysinh Chavda, general manager of Shri Somnath Trust said.
Devotees took dips in the holy water at the “triveni sangam” (confluence) of three rivers– Hiran, Kapila and Saraswati, located near the temple.
Security has been beefed up in and around the temple in view of the rush of the devotees, Chavda said.
According to Hindu mythology, there are several legends attached to this special night. One legend says that this is the day when Lord Shiva performs Taandava, a heavenly dance of creation, preservation, and destruction. Another says, on this day, Lord Shiva drank Halahal, a poison, that took out all the negativity to protect the world. One legend says that this is the day when Shiva and Parvati got married.
Whatever be the reason, Shiva devotees celebrate the occasion with fervour.
