CCTV footage shows the man tripped while boarding the train following which the ticket collector pulled him away from the coach, thereby preventing him from falling into the gap between the bogie and the platform.
Eyewitnesses said that Sandeep Sonkar, the passenger, was trying to board the Lucknow-bound Pushpak Express that was leaving Kalyan Junction’s Platform No 4. Sonkar, who hails from Gujarat, was on his way to Lucknow.
Speaking to DNA, Shashikant Chavan, the ticket checker said, “Everything happened in a matter of seconds. Sonkar was trying to board the general coach, but couldn’t as it was too crowded. He then tried boarding the reserved coach as the train was leaving the platform, but lost his balance.”
Sunil Udasi, the public relations officer with the Central Railway said, “Chavan’s presence of mind ensured that nobody was killed or injured. His presence of mind makes us proud to have such people in our staff. He will be rewarded.”
