Statues vandalised: PM Modi expresses disapproval, MHA asks states to take stern action
PM Narendra Modi has expressed his disapproval at spate of statue desecration incidents reported from parts of the country. He has spoken to Home Minister Rajnath Singh in this regard. The Home Ministry on its part has issued advisory to all states. In its advisory MHA said, ” MHA has asked the states that they must take all necessary measures to prevent such incidents. Persons indulging in such acts must be sternly dealt with & booked under relevant provisions of law”.
After two Lenin statues were destroyed in Tripura, a Periyar statue was razed in Tamil Nadu. On Wednesday, news came of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee’s statue being desecrated in Kolkata. In light of such incidents, the Centre has taken a strong stance and asked the states to clamp down on such offenders.
The demolition of Lenin’s statue in Belonia college square in Tripura on Monday by BJP activists and the subsequent glorification of the deed by some BJP leaders including Ram Madhav, governor Tathagata Roy and Subramaniam Swamy led to both outcries denouncing it and emboldening many of repeating the act elsewhere.
