Prime Minister Narendra Modi pays tribute to World War I martyrs
Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the Centenary Commemoration of World War I (1914 – 1918) by paying homage to the martyrs at Amar Jawan Jyoti on Tuesday. Modi laid a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti, a day after the commemoration was inaugurated by President Pranab Mukherjee.
The Centenary Commemoration of the World War I began on Monday, with President Pranab Mukherjee laying a garland at Amar Jawan Jyoti in India Gate. It pays homage to over 74,000 soldiers who laid down their lives fighting the war, whose names are etched in stone on the walls of India Gate. The President was accompanied by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, three Service chiefs and diplomatic heads of several nations involved in World War-I from 1914 to 1918.
The inauguration took place on the eve of the centenary of the battle of Neuve Chapple, during which many Indian soldiers were martyred. The Indian Army is commemorating the centenary of World War I from March 10-14. Later on Tuesday, an exhibition with war memorabilia from different regimental centres will be inaugurated by President Mukherjee at the Manekshaw Centre in Delhi Cantonment.
The period between 2014 and 2018 is being commemorated as the centenary of the first world war.
