Woman doc alleges public misconduct by J&K BJP minister

A woman doctor has sought the registration of a criminal case against a BJP minister in J&K for allegedly misbehaving with her in public.

Dr Gurmeet Kour, registrar of the state-run Hospital for Psychiatry Diseases, said Minister for Health and Medical Education Choudhary Lal Singh shouted at her in public, leaving her “mentally harassed and wrecked”. “This amounts to outraging the modesty of a lady medical officer in public,” she wrote.

The police are yet to register a case in the matter. “The matter has been referred to the legal cell since, in my opinion, no case could be made out against the minister going by the contents of the complaint,” SHO Bakshi Nagar, inspector Dilip Singh, said.

The doctor claimed she had gone with her colleagues to attend the inauguration of the hospital’s new building by the minister. “The minister walked up to me and asked why I was not wearing an apron,” she said. She claimed that on being told it was not required at a function, and that psychiatrists globally do not wear it, the minister started shouting and snapped his fingers, asking her to leave.

The minister claimed this was an attempt to prevent him from bringing an improvement in the health facilities in J&K.

The doctor has been issued a notice by the Government Medical College principal Dr Ghamsham Dev. The notice states that not wearing an apron “resulted in inconvenience to the minister and also created indiscipline”.
