The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has ensured that 13 child victims of sexual exploitation from a school in Orissa’s Nayagarh district were compensated with Rs 1 lakh each for “violation of their right to life and dignity”. The children were allegedly exploited by their teacher for around 18 months.
The commission had asked the Orissa government to pay compensation in the 2012 case. It was alleged that 38 students of Navodaya Vidyalaya were subjected to sexual exploitation by a teacher, also the warden of the residential school.
The commission, taking cognizance in the matter, initiated enquiry and concluded that the children were subjected to sexual exploitation and asked the government to pay the compensation. Jaimini Kumar Srivastava, PR officer, NHRC, said, “No amount of money can compensate what the children suffered. The due process of law must proceed and a strong message should go that no violators are spared.”
