Man detained for flinging plastic pouch and pamphlets in Gujarat Assembly

A 70-year-old man from Jetalvasana village of Mehsana district was detained in the Gujarat Assembly after he flung a plastic pouch — suspected to be containing liquor —- and pamphlets from the spectator’s gallery on Monday. The man was protesting against the poor implementation of liquor prohibition in the state, official sources said.

The man identified as Babubhai Shankerdas Patel is an activist working for “de-addiction” in the village located in Visnagar taluka of this district in North Gujarat. “The man has been detained on the Speaker’s order for obstructing the house. We will be sending the pouch to the forensic science laboratory. We will also be preparing a report about the same,” senior officials from the sergeant’s office of the Gujarat Assembly said.

The incident happened after the state assembly had paid homage to freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru on their death anniversary and had started discussing the provisions made for agriculture in the state budget. The man seated in one of the spectator’s gallery located over the opposition benches firstly flung the pouch and flung the pamphlets. He was immediately detained by the sergeants present in the gallery.

A copy of the pamphlet which is with The Indian Express is addressed to the Speaker, the Gujarat chief minister and all the members of the House. The pamphlet that is printed in Gujarat and carries the name, address and phone number of the raises a number of issues most of which are surrounding the liquor policy and the prohibition in the state.
