Bad goes good: Akshay Kumar’s ‘Gabbar Is Back’, but to the same grind
So, we see a bearded Akshay, a heavily bearded Akshay, a heavily salt-n-pepper bearded Akshay beating people indulging in corruption, so much so that ‘pachaas pachaas kos door jab koi aadmi rishvat leta hai, toh sab kahte hain mat le varna Gabbar aa jayega’.
We are left a bit confused, amused and bemused by the newly launched trailer of Akshay Kumar’s new movie ‘Gabbar Is Back’, for the mighty superstar is back, but to the same grind, to the same tried and tested ‘fight corruption’ motto.
For once, aren’t we burried too deep under the debris of ‘fighting corruption’ movies? Wasn’t Salman Khan’s ‘Jai Ho’ an eye-opener for people who still want to invest in such kind of movies? But yeah, there is this unmissable and ever-so-attractive thing about this genre. It’s like a whimsical fancy; you don’t/can’t practise it in real life, let’s go and try in movies – either watch it or make it.
The dream ends as soon as the trailer begins. The voiceover artist, who gives a certain description of the Gabbar of this movie, is taken from the ‘janhit-mein-jaari’ anti smoking ads played at the start of movies in theatres these days. And the voice is repulsive.

So much drama, we tell you and then the never ending fight begins. It’s actually never ending.
The Gabbar of the 1975 cult hit ‘Sholay’ doesn’t come to your mind even for a li’l while, because Akshay Kumar’s Gabbar is “a good man”. That Gabbar fought the heroes, this one fights the villains. What’s in the name, anyways?
The positive twist in the most negative character of our times is endearing, and we are sure that by the end of the movie you might just fall in love with THE GABBAR and at the end would say, “Main Hoon Gabbar”.
Gabbar is, in short, the self appointed morale police and vigilante who struts and fights anybody and everybody who takes ‘rishvat’ (bribe) and Akshay Kumar, just like ‘Special 26′ and ‘Baby’, plays the righteous man.
Shruti Haasan is beautiful and adds a pinch of romance to the movie and does exactly what Sonakshi Sinha has done in Akshay’s previous movies.
But what we fail to understand, and hence we are confused, wasn’t the message loud and clear in his previous movies? We like the twist in tale with the positification of Gabbar, but the repititiveness of the plot just ticks us off.
The ‘Sholay’ tune plays in the background and adds intrigue to the trailer, something we truly like.
Hoping the movie brings something different from what has been served to us before, we wait in anticipation. But if Akshay brings a second version of ‘Baby’, we will have to say, “Abb Tera Kya Hoga, Kaalia?”
