Ruling out any political motive behind the attack on St George Church in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday said the arrests made by police officials indicated that the attack was an outcome of revenge after police raided an illegal gambling den in Navi Mumbai.
Fadnavis said, “The reports received shows the motive was revenge. There is nothing to suggest the role of any political or social organisation at the moment.” However, after the arrests have been made and individuals confessions the police are still looking into all aspects.
According to Fadnavis, “The attack was plotted by one of the miscreants following police raid on his illegal gambling den. The miscreant suspected the church had lodged a complaint against the gambling den. To take revenge the owner of the gambling den reached out to three other friends and asked them to attack the church.”
Accordingly, next day they went and attacked the church and escaped. However, CCTV installed in the premises captured their act. And helped police to resolve the case.
Three days after the attack, police on Tuesday claimed to have cracked the case with the arrest of four persons.
“Four persons have been arrested in connection with the attack on the Saint George Catholic church,” Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner K L Prasad.
The IPS officer, however, refused to share further details at the moment. Under fire from the opposition, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis yesterday had set a 48 hour deadline to police to nab the culprits.
